Where are you located?

In June 2021, we relocated our family farm and mill to Wilseyville, CA in beautiful and rural Calaveras County. We loved living in Nevada City, CA where we originally started our farm, and Nevada County was so good to us! While we’ve moved 2 1/2 hours from the origination of Early Bird Farm & Mill’s birthplace in Nevada City , we are happy to continue serving the Northern California region as we continue to make wholesale deliveries to Nevada County, Sacramento and Bay Area regions. We also get to continue our relationships with our Northern California regenerative wheat and grain farmers with whom we partner with to provide you with the best tasting and nutrient dense grains.

Are your grains locally grown?

Early Bird Farm grows small amounts of grain here in Nevada County, California. We continue to push forward on producing heritage grains such as Red Fife Wheat and Otto File Corn, also partnering with other local growers to achieve Nevada County grown grains.
We also source our grains regionally. All our grain products are locally and regionally sourced throughout Northern California. From time to time, if a grain cannot be sourced regionally, we will acquire it from an organic farm elsewhere.

Are your grain products whole grain?

All our products are milled fresh with stone mills—the same way it has been done since Roman times—leaving the bran and germ intact for a 100% whole grain product and superior nutritional value. Our All-Purpose Flour, however, is the only exception. While it is also stone-ground whole, just like our other grains, it is then sifted to consistency, leaving some of the bran out of the flour to ensure a better rise.

Are your products organic?

Early Bird Farm is a registered organic farm in the process of certification with CDFA. We are committed to sustainable, regenerative practices on our 5-acre farm.
We partner with other certified organic Northern California farms to supply us with many of the grains we mill. Our mill facility processes only organically sourced grains, and is also in process of certification.

Are your flours enriched?

We produce whole grain products that have no need for enrichment. Our All Purpose Flour is still stone ground, and while it is sifted, it still contains much of the bran and germ which naturally enriches not only the nutritional value, but also the flavor!

Are your flours bromated?

Our flours are not bromated or chemically treated in any way whatsoever.

Where can I purchase Early Bird Farm products?

The easiest and most direct way to purchase our products is from our online Farm Store right here, for pick up at the farm, or for shipping directly to your home or business.
Our products are also available at Whole Foods throughout Northern California and Reno. In Nevada County, our products are available at SPD Markets, Briar Patch Co-Op, Tess’ Kitchen, Rainbow Market, Back Porch Market and other specialty stores.

Can I pick up my online order?

If you live in or near Calaveras County, California, you can pick up on site at our mill. Order pick-ups are Tuesdays and Fridays. When you place an order, you will receive confirmation that your order was received. When your order has been milled, you will receive another email letting you know your order is ready for pick up and directions and instructions will be included. Usually these emails are sent on Monday and Thursday afternoons. Orders can take 3 to 7 business days to process, depending upon how many orders there are ahead of yours.

Why is shipping so expensive?

Freight pricing is determined by weight and volume. Our products are dense in nutrition and flavor—and heavy. However, we trust you have “weighed” the benefits of fresh milled whole grain flour against the cost and found that our products are worth the investment!

What do the “Best Buy” and “Lot” numbers mean on Your packages?

We use an industrial lot numbering system in order to trace our flour back to when it was milled. The “Lot” number on the bag is also the mill date. Our flour is considered good to use for one year after the mill date as long as it is kept cool. We recommend our grain products are kept refrigerated or frozen when they are purchased to ensure ultimate freshness.
The “Best By” recommendation is marked twelve months after the mill date. This date assumes the product has been refrigerated; we recommend that our flour products be consumed within three months if they are NOT refrigerated.
